Four golfers dropped out of the PGA and Korn Ferry tourneys happening this weekend. Seven golfers removed themselves from competition last weekend at the Travelers Challenge. Some of these pros are choosing not to play due to their own positive covid tests, while others are making the choice due to a caddy or someone else close to them having a positive test.
What's noteworthy, as pointed out by somebody I heard on the radio and therefore noted myself this morning on bake's here LIVE, is that the golfers are voluntarily bowing out. I've heard story after story of players in MLB, NBA, even NFL testing positive for the virus and shortly thereafter, social media is aglow with criticism and opinions. In contrast, there's been little hype and no fanfare regarding golfers. Because I play fantasy golf, I follow the tournament withdrawals and cuts. Few stories have been written and it's been a passing blurb in the sports media.
I commend the golfers who have decided to cut bait and wait it out without complaints or grumbling. This new norm, warranted or not, has brought out what's inside us. As I heard in a sermon, "Why does our ugliness spill out on others from time to time? Because it's in there." Cameron Champ, Denny McCarthy, Dylan Frittelli, Harris English and Chad Campbell, all who have voluntarily removed themselves from main PGA Tour events, seemlingly have shown piety, patience and poise. These three I would expect from pro golfers, and the greatest of these is poise.
