ACQUIRE as NEEDED (daily)
Yesterday was Thursday. Today is Friday. Yesterday I made the mistake of going to the store before writing my column and got too tired to write. Today, I'm writing before I go to the store and, hopefully, the store will be open when I finish.
As I sat in Amos' room, in the dark, listening to him whimper and sniffle from tears he was choking back, I thought of how I was disappointed that my Yankees had been eliminated from the playoffs just moments before. Amos was being punished for disobedience and disregard for others, both common offenses for Amos. He was in his room because he wasn't permitted to watch Wreck It Ralph Breaks the Internet with the others. He had placed a lot of value in the viewing of this movie, so he had been distraught about missing it. I had just explained that because we are part of the kingdom of God, we practice second, third, unlimited chances. As a follower of a God who gave me unlimited grace, opportunity, chances through Jesus, it stands to reason, I offer the same. It is, however, not without demand. I must admit I was wrong. I must make amends. I must adhere to the way He designed me and my participation. So, as I sat in the dark, waiting for Amos to gather himself from self pity and man up to his disrespect, it occurred to me, sports is much like that. Sure, the Rays beat the Yankees 2 - 1, the winning run coming from the bat of Mike Brosseau against Aroldis Chapman in the 8th inning. Yes, the Yankees punishment for defeat tonight is watching another team win the World Series in a couple weeks, but there's always next season. They'll review their weaknesses and make amends. There'll be another chance.
In the meantime, the Rays will match up against the Asstros in the ALCS and Dodgers will play the Braves in the NLCS. Also, the Heat and Lebrons will play a Game 6, as Miami avoided elimination (unlike my Yankees) by defeating L.A. 111 - 108.
Five guys closed Round 2 tied atop the leaderboard in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Martin Laird, Patrick Can'tlay, Brian Harman, Austin Cook and Peter Malnati are all at 14 under par, one stroke ahead of the Doosh (Bryson Dechambeau). Play will resume tomorrow, moving day. Round 3, for those -7 and under, begins in the morning and four of my DraftKings lineup won't be participating.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets beat up on the Louisville Cardinals in an ACC matchup tonight in college football, 46 - 27. With the deciding Game 5 between the Yankees and Rays, with the potential last game of the NBA Playoffs, this football game and Amos' struggle didn't get a lot of viewers, I imagine. Amos missed 22 minutes of Wreck It Ralph Breaks the Internet before ready to make amends and admit his mistakes to the family. Geoff Collins made it possible for the Yellow Jackets to accomplish their goal. Amos needed coaching to accomplish his, too, and I was honored to be the one to do it. I happily left to walk the dogs, with all three children watching the remainder of Ralph's movie together.
