Farce...

ACQUIRE as NEEDED (daily) December 9

Happy Hump Day!

I watched a lot of the second half of Northwestern vs Pitt (college basketball) this evening. The end of game comeback to upset the Wildcats was exciting to watch and certainly looked exciting for the Panthers players and coaches. Yet, there were no fans in the building to share in that ecstasy.

We're beaten down by a virus and we're beaten down by the perception of that virus. As an avid sports fan, I've watched the toll that both have taken on players, teams and programs. I've seen the dissension, the hypocrisy, the inconsistency, like the sports industry is a microcosm of the national ambience. While the NBA and NHL completed their respective seasons and I take nothing away from the champions in either league, it was like a different game than we're used to. I joked recently on Twitter, "The NFL season being played with covid protocols affecting so many teams to their detriment is like going to a buddy's game night and he's got some nutty house rule that completely changes game play from what you know…" College football has been played, and while most games have had sufficient entertainment value, the reality is the season has been a farce.

I live on the best coast, in the shadow of California and under the thumb of Seattle. Portland is known for bikes, boobs, beer and bud. Our slogan is "Keep Portland Weird". According to Oxford Definitions, weird means suggesting something supernatural; uncanny. In this hyper-tolerant city, a conglomeration of parochial neighborhoods, we have an abundance of homeless. The river that divides the Rose City is called the Willamette, which, to my knowledge, means the valley of sickness and death. Our kids being at home all day, schooling virtually, has compromised every industry by requiring so much parental attention. Our police have been neutered, our downtown decimated and our civic spirit shut down.

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. Your rod and staff comfort me." This is bakesHere.
